At this season when we “Deck the halls with boughs of holly,” let us remember the healing message of the Holly plant, sacred to the Druid peoples, and one of the key flower essences of Dr. Bach. When Dr. Bach made the Holly flower essence in 1935, he described it as being for “jealousy, envy, revenge, suspicion, the different forms of vexation,” and as a protection “from everything that is not Universal Love.” Julian Barnard says it deals with “all kinds of strongly negative emotions which not only burn within a person but express themselves in destructive, even violent behaviour.” Therapist Gay Mack had the insight that Holly is the remedy for

"The root of joy is gratefulness...It is not joy that makes us grateful; it is gratitude that makes us joyful.” This quote by the Benedictine Monk, Brother David Steindl-Rast, captures the essence of Thanksgiving. In our culture, we often feel that joy and happiness come from success, and that we can be thankful only when we get what we want. Brother David, with his deep spiritual wisdom, shows us that joy comes from being grateful for what we are already given, not what we think we need or want. Even during times of challenge and loss, there is so much for which to be grateful, starting with the gift of life itself. Gratitude for life forms the core message of...

Star Tulip (Calochortus tolmiei) is such an amazing, endlessly versatile flower essence - we continually receive new insights and methods of applications from our network of healers. This report came in just this week from, C. Allen, a practitioner who implements cold laser therapy in tandem with flower essences: “When I find a patient who has been in an accident, and is really stuck and needs to find understanding and acceptance around this event, I use Star Tulip flower essence under the tongue. I then ask the patient to tell me about the accident. You would be amazed at how much comes up when they start to talk about the accident after taking Star Tulip. I find that it really helps them to come to a place of understanding. Then their physical body really opens up and is more receptive to the cold laser therapy and the treatments are more effective.” Native to California, the Star Tulip is stunning to encounter.

At this challenging time, we are thinking of the Mountain Pride flower essence, for strength and courage to face adversity, grounded in the solidity of our spiritual core as a source of peace and purpose. Mountain Pride, Penstemon newberryi, is a native wildflower found in the mountains of California. This small shrubby perennial plant is tough, with woody stems and leathery serrated leaves, allowing it to survive the harsh winters of the mountain heights. It does not choose the gentle alpine meadows for its habitat, but rather takes its stand growing from the crevices of granite rock cliffs and spreading over rock-strewn slopes. The horizontal tubular flowers flare trumpet-like, while radiating a fiery red-magenta glow. (Magenta, a melding of the red and violet ends of the spectrum, is a color of vibrant regeneration.) They are flaming beacons of strength, anchored in solid rock. Yet the energy of these flowers is not totally outwardly directed. The tubular shape of the flowers holds an inner space, which then opens out and radiates to the world. Thus we can understand how the Mountain Pride is the flower essence for those who must cultivate an inner core of strength and spiritual purpose, as a source of power and courage to become spiritual warriors, and confront evil and adversity...

Mugwort (Artemisia douglasiana) is in the same botanical tribe as Sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata); however Sagebrush flourishes in hot, dry and sparse conditions, while Mugwort enjoys a mix of sun and shade, and grows along riverbanks or other areas that allow its roots to be moist. Both plants are named for the Greek Moon Deity Artemis, bearing pungent silver-green leaves that shimmer in lunar light. With Sagebrush we discover the qualities of the new moon, the ability to allow quiet solitude and “positive emptiness.” On the other hand, Mugwort has more affinity to water and to the full moon. With Mugwort, we are addressing a quality of psychic radiance and expansive warmth. The Mugwort flower essence helps those who need to cultivate a state of body-soul consciousness that is simultaneously grounded yet spaciously integrated with higher soul dimensions. Artemisia douglasiana was used by Native American tribes as a...

As we move further into the Fall season, watching the leaves fall from the trees, and our garden plants finish their yearly cycles, we are thinking of the Sagebrush, the flower essence for letting go and emptying out. In fact, the Sagebrush plant blooms late into the year, from late summer into the early Fall, especially in the higher elevations. It is a plant of the high desert, covering vast empty spaces of the arid intermountain west of North America, known as the Great Basin, from the Sierra Nevada and Cascade mountain ranges to the Rocky Mountains. Its silvery grey-green foliage gives us a hint why it was named Artemisia, for Artemis, the Greek moon goddess. Yet it is also a member of the Sunflower or Asteraceae plant family, although with very reduced flowers, little tufts of yellow disk florets that appear on slender stalks above the woody stems, and the tough leaves with their three lobes. (Hence the species name Artemisia tridentata – three teeth.) Sagebrush was known to the Native Americans for its medicinal properties coming from its pungent oils containing camphor, terpenoids, and tannins. It has anti-microbial properties, and was used for coughs, colds, fevers, bleeding, infections and various pains. Most significantly, Sagebrush was used for purification of body and soul, as a smoke during the ritual sweat lodges, and as a smudge to clear the energy of a room or environment.

As autumn deepens in the northern hemisphere, many struggle with season affective disorder (SAD) or other physical and psychological symptoms when dealing with increasing cold and darkness. The St. John’s Shield FloraFusion Oil and/or St. John’s Wort flower essence are important allies to remember during this time of year. For example, CK of Germany shared this report from her husband with us: As autumn deepens in the northern hemisphere, many struggle with season affective disorder (SAD) or other physical and psychological symptoms when dealing with increasing cold and darkness. For example, CK of Germany shared this report from her husband with us: “I used your St. John’s Wort oil during a period of time when the days were bitterly cold and there had been no sunshine for nearly a week. Though not typically a depressive type, I experienced the symptoms of depression. I was listless and sluggish. I only wanted to sleep. I needed to rouse my forces for a professional commitment and I simply could not do so. I wanted to cancel the event. However, through a process of kinesiological testing your Saint John’s Wort oil tested very strongly, along with oral doses of St. John’s Wort essence.

Tonight begins the Jewish Festival of Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, a time to reflect on our shortcomings (sins). The spiritual themes of this holy time teach us about forgiveness and taking responsibility for our thoughts, feelings and actions. Tonight begins the Jewish Festival of Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, a time to reflect on our shortcomings (sins). The spiritual themes of this holy time teach us about forgiveness and taking responsibility for our thoughts, feelings and actions. These themes remind me (Richard) of the Willow essence of Dr. Bach, one of the first Bach flowers I experienced 40 years ago when I was a volunteer helping to build a Buddhist meditation center. I was dealing with severe food sensitivities by restricting my diet (not so common in those days). When I was with the other volunteers in the common kitchen, I felt that they were hostile to me because of my diet. I felt everyone was being very unfair and uncaring...

Recently a client reported on her use of Columbine flower essence: “At age 54 I became an empty-nester – three wonderful children with lives of their own, no longer needing me the way they once did. I felt low-grade depression, I gained weight, I started drinking. I felt restless. My career as a nurse midwife seemed to no longer compel my interest as it once did. I felt stuck but unable to take a risk to change. Enter Columbine flower essence. Taking this flower shifted my perspective on the possible. I felt inspired to write – and I’ve recently published a book. This has led to offers to teach... I feel alive again, a feeling that there is so much to do and give beyond my former role as mother.”

Mind-Full is our spray formula for focus and alertness, completely natural without side effects, made with organic and wild-harvested flower essences and essential oils. It is popular with students, professionals, and anyone whose responsibilities demand clarity of thought and precise attention. Particularly in our connected age of 24/7 distractions, this formula speaks to the need to filter out what is inessential and get down to business. For example, we received the following unsolicited report from a customer in Los Angeles:
