Sage is an excellent flower essence to consider as we enter the New Year and wish to gain greater insight and perspective regarding our goals and life lessons. A practitioner who encountered Sage for the first time while attending a class at Terra Flora exclaimed:
“The aroma of this plant, grounds me yet at the same time makes me feel spacious, as though I could understand so much about life and most especially, about my Self. Now I know why I give it so frequently in formulas for my clients.....”
These insights about Sage, are so discerning, for this plant imparts those very healing qualities. Sage (salvia officinalis) is a member of the “Lamiaceae” or mint family of plants. With their pungent, vivifying aromas, square sturdy stems, and strong relationship to the elements of earth and fire; the Lamiaceae always speak to the integration of the earthly body of substance to higher realms of Light and Warmth.
The Sage flower essence helps us access wisdom that is living deep within the “body” of our life experience. It is a wisdom we access not simply by our intellectual consideration; rather it is what Greek philosophers terms “Vita Sophia” the “life wisdom” gained through immersion into the actual experience of life, and then subsequently, the ability to stand back and reflect upon it.
The Sage brings a feeling of embodiment, yet at the same time spiritual perspective. This is how the plant acquired its name, for it was said that those who imbued themselves of this plant would live into ripe and fruitful old age, due to the ability to observe and gain life wisdom. Thus, we also have the English word, “Sage,” to describe an elder who is imminently wise, by virtue of having lived and learned through the very fabric of life itself.
The flower essence of Sage bestows the remarkable ability to detach sufficiently enough from the flow of life, that we might be able to say, “Ah – ah! Now I know more fully. From my newly enlightened perspective I glean the pattern, the real life lesson I was meant to encounter.” This is also why the herb of Sage was also used on a physical level as an astringent – i.e., to help a mother dry her breast milk when it is time stop nursing, to relieve one who sweats too much, to mitigate excessive menstrual bleeding, or as a general diuretic to help release excessive bodily fluids. This “drying” quality of the Sage is necessary when the fluid flow of live swirls so intensely, that we are no longer able to stand back with enough perspective and see the deeper meaning of the life currents that envelop us.
Sage is very beneficial when combined with two other flower essences - Chestnut Bud and Black- Eyed Susan. This trio of flower essences allows us to truly see what might be hidden from consciousness, and to acquire new resolve and insight regarding dysfunctional patterns and habits that stymie our true life purpose.
